A few months after helplessly witnessing his mother Michelle's suicide by gunshot in 1989, Dylan Jacobs, who is mute, moves into a Burbank apartment with his father Michael. After Michael leaves Dylan alone to work a night shift as a radio DJ, Dylan finds a hidden grimoire left behind by the previous tenant.Dylan reads a passage titled "Wish of Desire," which details a spell for granting your heart's desire while warning of a deceptive djinn who could take one's soul as a consequence. Dylan performs the ritual and wishes to be given a voice.Electronics throughout the apartment begin turning on by themselves. Dylan hides in the bathroom when he sees a supernatural creature appear.Using a nearby newspaper photograph, the entity takes the form of an escaped convict who recently died. The djinn tries attacking Dylan through the bathroom door and by flooding the room with gas, but Dylan manages to fight back and survive.Dylan tries to open the front door and break a window, but discovers he is supernaturally trapped inside the apartment. Dylan fights the creature again after it takes the appearance of the old man who previously lived there.Dylan rereads the grimoire and learns he has to survive one hour in the djinn's presence to receive his wish, otherwise he will be damned to the shadow realm where the creature comes from. The book additionally reveals that to banish the djinn, Dylan must extinguish the ritual candle after the stroke of midnight.The creature next assumes the appearance of Dylan's dead mother. After Dylan survives several attacks, the djinn tries fooling him by speaking in his mother's voice. Dylan merely extinguishes the candle and the djinn seemingly disintegrates.Still unable to speak, Dylan goes to sleep. Dylan dreams of being able to stop his mother before shooting herself. Dylan asks if he could have prevented her death. Michelle tells him no. Dylan cries while embracing his mother.Dylan wakes back in reality in the morning. When Dylan's father comes home, the djinn unexpectedly attacks Michael from behind. The djinn crushes Michael's throat, making Michael mute while transferring his ability to speak to Dylan.
