Vying to be king are Aethelstan and Aelfweard, both sons of Edward but with the claim of Aethelstan, the eldest, in dispute. Aethelstan has fallen under the influence of Ingilmundr, a half-Dane, half-Saxon, who appears to have prophetic powers.
